Charles Hodge - (1797 – 1878) Arguably the most important American theologian, Charles Hodge dominated the intellectual life at Princeton Theological Seminary for generations. His systematic theology laid the foundation for America's apologetically motivated wing of Christianity, and has enjoyed a recent outpouring of attention as issues like Scottish Common Sense Moral Realism and Darwinism grab public attention.
David Hume - (1711-1776) Known for giving one of the most important defenses of broad skepticism and substantial counters to the design argument, this historian turned philosopher has become one of the most famous figures in the western cannon. Any modern student of epistemology or philosophy of religion will at some point have to interact with Hume.
Herman Dooyeweerd - (1894 - 1977) Abraham Kuyper began a revolution in social theory that had tremendous impact on public life, but it took a law professor turned philosopher like Dooyeweerd to synthesize Kuyper's ideas into a full blown, over arching philosophy. Dooyeweerd is among the most challenging philosophers to study, but also one of the most unique. His work is widely regarded as the most complete defense of an irreducible system of metaphysics.
